Source of Tech Costs Confirmed

New studies on the total cost of technology ownership have confirmed what I have been writing about for the past two years. In one of my past series of posts named "Where's the Cost In...?", I discussed where to find the real, hidden costs for:
I am happy to announce that a recent IDC report on Total Cost of Ownership found that over a 3 year period:

  • Personnel Costs are 50% to 70% of the total cost.
  • Infrastructure, including communications, power, cooling & facilities are 30% to 40%.
  • Hardware and software combined are only 20% and 25% of your total cost.

It's easy to cringe at the price of software. It's easy to get mad over the cost of hardware. But the reality is, the lion's share of your costs are the people that maintain your systems.

Any way you can reduce that cost becomes pure profit.
