Gadget Fever

I gotta have it! I can’t live without it.

Whenever you experience those urges, take a deep breathe and collect yourself. You only really need food, air, water, shelter, etc. You don't need the latest cell phone or other gizmo. I'm not saying you must live like an Amish monk; just remember that all technology is disruptive, so be cautious. Simply owning the latest and greatest gadget does not necessarily help your business.

You need to take your ego out of it and ask the hard business questions before you spend. Don't let a vanity purchase impact your ability to make money.

  1. I frequently find that the "latest, greatest tech on earth" is merely a distraction to my business. Give me what I need to run my business smoothly and efficiently. Not that a new iPhone wouldn't be a bad idea, but do I really need the latest in laptop innovations to send and receive email? It looks cool in the conference room, but at the end of the day, I just spent $2000 on something my 5 yr old laptop (that has finally depreciated, by the way) did just fine.

I agree with Louis - make sure your technology investments are based on business needs and improvement, not "looking cool".
